Carbonnieux Could Learn Something!

by Tom V » Mon Nov 07, 2011 1:19 pm

Been digging around in the forgotten depths of my cellar lately, so what do I come across but a 2001 Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc from Costantia in South Africa. Remembering how disappointing my 2001 Carbonnieux experiences have been, and the similar experiences of others on WLDG and cellar tracker, I decided to open the Steenberg last night with my blue claws and check it out.
Wasn't expecting much, after all it's the white bordeaux types that are supposed to age well, not South African SB's. Surprise! This wine was very good! The nose was fresh with mostly bell pepper and tropical type fruits, specifically pineapple, which carried through to the palate. Rather full bodied with excellent acidity and balance! Very enjoyable at half the price of the Carbonnieux. I think the folks at Carbonnieux need to hop a jet and find out how it's done!
