Looking for wine stores in NYS

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Nov 06, 2011 12:37 pm

As some of you may know, my wife and I will be heading to Plymouth on the Thanksgiving weekend for a family birthday.

Can't seem to find any good wine stores in Plymouth itself, so was wondering about stores in cities we will pass on the way down.

We plan to drive by-through: Syracuse, Utica, Schenectady and Albany.

Can anyone suggest stores worth stopping at along that route?

Thanks.

Not Fair! You get to celebrate Thanksgiving twice.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Bruce-
I've never been there, but I recall hearing nice things about Table and Vine in West Springfield, MA. maybe some of the locals will chime in.
I have a business contact who lives in Plymouth and I will email her for any input she may have. Caution she is not a wine person.

If you end up in Ithaca, Northside Wine and Spirits is a pretty good store with a large selection.

Marketview in Rochester ranks among the best in my opinion. A bonus, if you'll be taking the Thruway (I-90), is that it's just 5 minutes or so out of the way. Take the I-390 North exit (second Rochester exit) off the Thruway to Jefferson Rd. The address is 1100 Jefferson Rd. Happy shopping.

I agree that Northside is a good store..BUT, if he winds up in Ithaca, I think he made a wrong turn..Empire in Albany, Harborview and Liquor City (Dewitt) in the Syracuse area are similiar to Marketview, IMHO,,Deckers in Fayetteville suburb of Siberacuse has eclectic selection, not as large a store as the other 4. Table and Vine is excellent tho the other stores have better prices.

It is a bit out of your way, but if you can carry it back into Canada it might be worth you while to take I-95 N into New Hampshire. The state run stores on either side of the interstate are first rate stores, good selections, good prices, and no sales tax. If you can carry a few cases back it will be worth you while to make the one hour detour (30 min. each way). It's only about 25 miles north of Boston.

Too bad you're not traveling through Rochester. I'd suggest White House on Monroe Ave. In Syracuse there's the afformentioned Liquor City next to Wegman's in Dewitt (cheap, decent but not fantastic selection, the ocaisional super bargain like Austrian smaragd gruner for $10, easy highway access); Decker's a little hard to find, prices rather high but probably not by Canadian standards, some interesting things; Pascales Liquor Square on Erie Blvd in a new location east of where they used to be (past Outback Steakhouse now), less esoterica than they used to have 10 years ago, but sometimes some interesting things (a Vajra Friesia!), priced higher than they should be [they have a satellite location in Cicero south of Rt. 31 that is very convenient coming from Canada); Clay Wine and spirits, next to Wegman's on Rt.31 but way up North of the city off Rt. 481, but if you're coming from the north, not so out of the way, they used to have a much better selection of stuff (I remember buying Verset here), but once in awhile have some gems, currently some Vissoux Beaujolais in the back cooler. Don't waste your time at Harborview. And if you can make it down to Ithaca, there are 3 interesting shops down there. Give me a call and do drop in!

Happy trails!

Bruce, in Albany there is Empire Wines
http://www.empirewine.com/wine/
I have never actually been to the store but I have bought from them online several times and have found that their prices are very good and a decent selection from what I can see. Never had a problem with the ordering and delivery and will use them again in future.

When travelling that route we always stop at Bremmer's Wine & Liquor World in Utica. Bremmer's is located at 4684 Commercial Drive and can be reached at 315-768-6400. Ask for Bud; he is a friend of Thomas P. They have excellent selections from all over the world, but the collection of Finger lakes wines can hardly be beat anywhere.

Try stoppping at Triphammer Wines and Spirits. It is located on North TripHammer Road in Ithaca NY. It features most of the fingerlake wineries and other sourrounding local wineries. It has a large selection and has great help. You can check out the website - http://www.triphammerwines.com/about.htm

Hope that helps and enjoy your trip!

While the Ithaca and Rochester shops mentioned are good ones, Bruce is driving from Precott, ON to MA, so I assume he will be coming down Rt. 81 and getting on the Thruway (Rt. 90) eastbound at Syracuse. So only the shops from Syracuse eastwards would be practical.

Right Joe. I missed that until Howie brought it to my attention. Actually, Marketview is so great that I'd still recommend it. What's an extra 200 miles or so  ?
