Which Riesling to open?

by Patrick Martin » Sat Nov 05, 2011 8:14 pm

My local winos group is having a theme of "Leakers, Geezers, and other Undesirables", to test out if ullage, leakage, etc. makes an obvious effect (wines which one knows are cooked or otherwise flawed are not allowed).

I am bringing some German leakers, since they are so common from there. All four are leakers, which 2 should I open (i.e. will show the best, independent of leaking)?:

-2001 Kerpen Spatlese* Wehlener Sonnenuhr (artist label)
-2001 Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Auslese
-2001 Richter Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese
-2001 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese***

Thanks,
Patrick

sure about the 3 star S-O? Didn't realize there was one in 2001. The 1 and 2 star are drinking well (I actually prefer the 1, racier) and I generally prefer S-O (2001 on) to those other (good) guys. I'd go with that, and maybe Kerpen.
I've not found slight seepage to be a big problems with medium-sweet Riesling.

Oops, you're right, Dale-- it's a two-star. (I cut and pasted from my spreadsheet, that's my defense!).

These are all medium-to-bad leakers, though that said, none has an obviously low fill...

I expect you're correct, that these will show well despite their condition. Actually, a discussion about how seepage doesn't mean much for German wines (a position advocated by me, rejected by others) led to this wine theme being proposed (after an uber-nerdy discusssion about the importance of ullage followed).

I haven't had the Kerpen, but the 1998 of the same wine was in a perfect place a year ago, and I suspect the 2001 is drinking very well.

I have direct experience with leaking 2001 Meulenhof ET Auslese - it shows very well now!

The Kerpen should also be in a good place.

Those 2001 Selbachs are so luscious, though they are also likely the best agers of what you have listed.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've had the Kerpen several times before (from non-leakers), so I'm pretty curious to try the others. Since they sounds open for business, I may crack the Meulenhof and either the S-O or the Richter.

I'll report on these wines after we taste them on Wednesday evening.
