Kale and Scheurebe

by Bill Hooper » Sat Nov 05, 2011 3:30 pm

The first frosts have hit the whole of Germany, and that means that the Kale (Grünkohl) is especially flavorful right now. I picked up a bunch today at the Saturday market and along with some large fillets of Halibut in a simple Beurre Blanc sauce we had dinner begging for Scheurebe. And so it was.

2010 Müller-Catoir Haardt Scheurebe Kabinett Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 12,5% alc.

I had thought at first that 2010 had been an unkind vintage for Scheurebe based on the very citric profile that many of them showed upon release in the spring. As the summer wore on, I started second guessing that assessment and now that fall is here those babies have really blossomed. The gooseberry and grapefruit that the M-C was giving off earlier has turned more orange and Key Lime and a sweeter fragrance emerges from the glass. Virile and beneficial acidity remains.

Cheers,
Bill

Bill, I know you were talking more about 2010 in your note than about M-C's Scheurebe, but this is as good a time as any to mention that I'd sell my grandmother (if she were still alive) to have my local importer bring more of M-C's Scheurebe.

I feel your pain. M-C is sold out of the Kabinett and Spätlese Trocken versions here with only the Auslese and Beerenauslese left. They produced very little Scheu in 2010 and were concerned that there would be enough to go around. It is good to see that Scheurebe still commands respect from some producers.

Cheers,
Bill
