WTN: Recent wines

by Salil » Thu Nov 03, 2011 2:00 pm

From various bottles opened during a big dinner before the storm hit CT (thankfully power didn't go out until I'd done most of the cleaning up afterward), and during the last few days without power (staying at a good friend's home, and still eating/drinking quite well).

2010 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Anrecht
Awesome. Electric, herbal and mint-tinged Riesling fruit over a base of pure slate. Ripe, quite sweet and rich but superbly balanced by bright but not overwhelming acidity, and so easy to drink. This won't last long in my cellar.

2002 Noël Verset Cornas
Doesn't have the depth or power of other vintages of Verset, but still a beautiful wine - green olives, autumnal forestal leafiness and a vivid bloody meatiness on a medium weight frame with tannins mostly resolved and bright acidity beneath.

2003 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese
Remarkable for an '03; very pure, refreshing and light with ripe peach, melon and apple fruit framed by minerally and floral elements. There's a sense of real freshness and brightness to the flavours with more acidity than I'd expect in the vintage, and great balance.

1998 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes
Superb. Starts out with a beautiful fragrance of fresh red fruits, sandalwood and that exotic Vosne spice element, and with air more savoury truffled and floral notes emerge. There's a sense of real purity to the flavours in the mouth; flavour conveyed without weight and with superb balance, and while it's still quite youthful, it's an outstanding wine that's a real pleasure to sit down with and explore over a few hours.

2010 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese
Packed with flavour, yet comes across remarkably light and delicate, almost weightless. There's a spectrum of Mosel fruit ranging from ripe strawberries and citrus fruits to slightly tarter green apple notes, a solid base of slate beneath and moderate sweetness matched by powerful acidity that gives this tremendous cut and precision. This is one of the best balanced 2010s I've had yet from Germany, and I definitely need to get some in the cellar.

1995 Carl Schmitt-Wagner Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg Riesling Auslese
Comes across fully mature with layers of developed smoky, creamy and other savoury elements combining seamlessly with ripe fruit and minerality. There's a burnished tinge to the fruit flavours and this comes across almost dry with just a faint sense of sweetness on the back end.

Considering the weather that hit the Rhone Valley that year, this wine represents quite a success. Of course, the N Rhone didn't get the same deluge that ruined the vintage in the S Rhone, but it was still a difficult year. Fortunately, the steep slopes of Cornas help drainage so his vines probably fared better than many.

Nice notes!

Wait, what? I invested all the money I had in 2002 Southern Rhones because Parker hated them and I was 'calibrating my palate' in reverse to his. I've been waiting all this time to enjoy them and now you're telling me there was bad weather that year and they really do suck? Damn. :?

One man's "powerful" is another man's "face ripping". ;) Being as you're a learned drinker, do you think the acidity will retreat a bit over time? Make that a lot of time?

No idea what will happen. Your guess is as good as mine, but I found the wine very well balanced - the acids are high, but they're balanced by plenty of richness and enough sweetness. My gut impression is that if the wine's this well balanced young, it should drink well for at least some time. Then again, that's just my intuition without anything to go off. Given that I've ordered a bunch of 2010 Merkelbachs, I hope I'm right.
