2009 Knipser Blauer Spätburgunder Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 13,0% alc.
Superb and affordable. This is one of the few examples I can think of where I liked the 2009 Spätburgunder (almost) as much as the 2008. Generally 2009 is the riper, friendlier, more heralded Pinot Noir vintage. But overall 2008 is so much more satisfying, vinous, shows more depth and enunciates terroir more clearly -the more classic of the two. Even so, whatever Knipser is putting in the Kool-aid, I’m drinking it up. Despite the rather large range, they are always more concerned with balance and structure than with size and the wines are just beautiful.
Blackberry fruit and savory little hints of chicory, molasses, and anise. Perfumed, but not noxious and well structured. A delightful Pinot Noir. Yup, from Germany.
Cheers,
Bill
