WTN: Radee Mangosteen Thai Ambrosia NV..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Oct 17, 2011 9:38 am

Cracked this the other night w/ Susan & her friends:
1. Radee Mangosteen Ambrosia (http://www.RadeeWine.com; 12.0%) Thailand NV: Light reddish/rose slight bricked color; beautiful intense/fragrant exotic/creamy/citric/papaya/tropical fruit/mangosteen (?) slight herbal/earthy amazing nose; fairly tart/citric quite sweet very exotic/mango/papaya/creamy/tropical flavor; very long very sweet exotic/mango/papaya/tropical fruit almost Muscat-like finish; one of the most incredible/exotic dessert wines I've ever had; very sweet but the acidity to not be cloying; absolutely amazing stuff. $31.50/hlf (CB)

And a wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Last July when I was shopping at DarrellCorti's, I spied this wine in his very good selection of dessert wines. Say whot...mangosteen?? Wouldn't recognize a mangosteen even if I were being stoned by them. Obviously..something I could not resist...I am such a weakling. Being it was a Thai wine...how good could that be?? So I cracked it last week w/ very low expectations.
I was blown away by the stuff. One of the most exotic dessert wines I can recall. Not knowing what a mangosteen is like, I couldn't give you any clue if it was authentic varietal mangosteen or not.
Radee means passion in Thai. Founded by Makiko Yamashita, who developed a passion for passion fruit in Kenya. They also make a passion fruit and pineapple wine..which now I absolutely must try.
But this is one amazing dessert wine and I struggle for the words to describe it.

Didn't realize mangosteen could be made into wine! The fresh fruit is very tasty. I was told by a friend in SE Asia that the durian is termed the King of Fruits while the mangosteen is the Queen - you eat them in tandem.

The late Johnny Apple of the NY Times used to rave about mangosteens. An example here:
