Notes from Monday afternoon at Jojo's shop with International Wine and Food Society bigwigs Bernie and Oscar. Jojo just got his case of Climens 2007 and wanted to try it out. Bernie insisted on a red so we followed the sweet wines with a Barolo. Not the best sequence but we managed.
Chateau Climens (Barsac) 2007 - The color seemed rather deep. Smoky and spicy on the nose. Perfectly balanced acidity and sweetness makes it rather light on the tongue. Very fresh and not at all heavy. A real easy drink although very young. Honey, caramel, oranges, candied orange rind. Sugary as well. Quite long. This wine is put together really well. The high ratings are completely justified. Outstanding.
Chateau de Fargues 2003 - A pity this followed the Climens. Seems a little less sweet and rather disjointed sweetness and acidity. Richer texture, though. Typical apricot and marmalade. A little raisined as well. Not bad but far from the Climens.
Prunotto Barolo Bussia 1999 - A very dark, young-looking Barolo. Prunes, forest floor. The fruit seems a little cooked and overripe. raisins, earth, mushrooms. A very modern take on Barolo but an attractive wine nonetheless. Drinking well now. There may be some room for more complexity with a few more years but why wait? Excellent.
