Wine And Dieting

by ChaimShraga » Thu Oct 13, 2011 5:17 pm

By the lunar calendar, it's been two years since I started my current health regime. I've lost a little over 20 kilograms, just about all of it in the first year of the regime. That's about 45 pounds, which sounds even better. Effectively, the weight loss is greater, since a lot of the fat has been converted to muscles. I even ran the half marathon in San Francisco this summer. I started out as heavyweight in the frame of a welterweight and I'm down to a little less than middleweight, which I think is pretty good for a guy in his mid 40's.

The best part is my wine drinking didn't even take a hit, since so much of the change and loss was due to a lot of gym hours. A bottle of wine doesn't contribute so much calories-wise so much as it whets the appetite, and that can be controlled, it turns out. I could have lost more if I did drink less, but my thinking is I'm happier when I'm enjoying life, and it's easier to train hard when I have a few evenings in the week filled with good wine, good food and good company to look forward to.

So, I thought it was time to share.

Congratulations on the weight loss and the half marathon. Good job.

I was just about to edit my post to add that I'm eating a hell of a lot of tuna, which I used to just hate!

Congrats, Chaim. Actually, the feat isn't so much losing the weight initially but keeping it off and holding to a new program for life. Good on you for both.

Thanks, all.

Actually, I've been keeping the same weight for a year and I've actually come to enjoy tremendously the workouts.

I just wish I'd known years ago that I wouldn't have to give up wine for it.

Nicely done. By comparison, it has taken me about three years to lose about 50 lbs, likewise without giving up wine with dinner most nights. My exercise regime is more laid back than what you describe, mostly swimming, hiking and, this last year, Tai Chi; but then I'm in my 50's. Understanding nutrition and managing the types of food I eat, more than reducing quantities, has made a big difference. My goal is to lose another 15 pounds.

How often can you eat tuna before mercury becomes a problem?

Cheers.

Chaim,
I took off 20 pounds in about three months and have kept it off for six more - and never gave up wine.
Regular exercise is, IMO, the only way.
Best, Jim

I have no idea about the mercury issue. I guess you can't live 100% healthy without becoming a monk, which I have no intention of becoming.
