WTN: Nice Campania, ok Burg, Godello, pink

by Dale Williams » Thu Oct 13, 2011 3:14 pm

After working all day at a meeting Sunday, I marinated chicken in a kecap manis/ginger sauce, grilled and had with leftover greens and 2010 Chermette/Vissoux "Griottes" Beaujolais rose, Light, maybe a bit dilute, good acidity. I've liked more before, probably the food, should have gone for a beefier rose. B/B- for me this night.

Monday I did farfalle in a mushroom sauce (a little pancetta cheat on meatless Monday), with the 2007 Apicella " Tramonti" Costa d'Amalfi. I've been trying to try more Southern/Central Italians. Rare for me to buy a handsell from someone I don't know (Garnet in this case), but I liked this. Believe I was told a blend of indigenous grapes including Piedrosso, but label says Tintore and Per Palummo. Fresh red fruit, crunchy cranberriness, good acids, some tannins, but smooth (without impression of glossiness). I'll buy this again. B+

Tuesday I grilled some littlenecks and doused with a garlic sauce, Betsy used on pasta and we had with the 2009 Terra de Lobo Godello. Good acids, light, a hint of almond that reminds me more of Italian whites than Spanish. Clear and fresh, but not a lot of there there. B-

Wednesday she roasted chicken and brussels sprouts, we had with rice w/furikake and the 2005 F & D Clair "Les Murgers des Dents de Chiens" Saint-Aubin 1er. I really liked this wine on release. This still has some solid pear fruit and a hint of hazelnut, but there is just the hint of some oxidative notes, and the wine seems much shorter than I remember. I'm thinking PremOx is tiptoeing in. For now, B-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Too bad about the burg, I think Burgundy Blanc and roast chicken is my favorite food match.

Let me guess, you prefer butter to olive oil?

I'm not sure I have a favorite wine/food pairing. My favorite food is probably tomatoes, cheese, bread (often in the form of pizza) lubricated with olive oil and then whatever wine goes with is pretty darn good!

I have quite a few favorite food pairings, most of which won't resonate well for you, alas, Rahsaan:

salmon and Riesling or Grüner Veltliner
lobster and Champagne
venison and Syrah
squab and Burgundy
wild boar and Nebbiolo
lamb and Bordeaux
duck and Grenache
Neal's Yard farmhouse Cheddars and Port

Most of the above, in fact, are the reasons why I'm no longer a vegetarian (well, that and my marriage to a devoted carnivore)

Dale,

Per'e Palummo (or however it's spelled) is I believe a dialect name for Piedirosso. Tintore di Tramonti is a grape indigenous to the village of Tramonti, I believe it's a 'teinturier' (red-fleshed). Some great wines coming out of many corners of Campania.

Butter and olive oil each have their place. I certainly love good pizza (with Barbera).

Grenache and duck? I may have to give it a shot this weekend.

I know we've had threads on this before but I drink everything with pizza (or at least everything that I drink). Just depends on the pizza.

I didn't find that Godello very exciting either, and I'm usually a fan of that grape. Was being heavily pushed at a local shop with lots of blurbs about it being a 92 pt. WA bottle. Meh!
