WTN: 2003 Laurel Glen Cab Sauv

by Jenise » Thu Oct 13, 2011 12:14 pm

For dinner last night I served grilled steak on pan-fried potatoes with onions drizzled with a demi glace and a sprinkle of blue cheese. When I went to the cellar to choose a Bordeaux, I ended up bringing back a 2003 Laurel Glen instead. I bought a case about two years ago--or should say stole for the ridiculous price of $16 a bottle--and had not opened one since taking delivery. I've been a fan of Laurel Glen for years. I recall mentioning the deal here and someone saying they'd tried the wine and passed on it (though at four or so times my cost) because it was "too green".

Boy would he be sorry if he paid what I did and tasted what we did last night. The wine's open and drinking well right now on initial pour, though it developed well in the glass and has another decade of life in it. Dense purple color with blackberry, black cherry and mint on the nose. Mouth-filling fruit, herbs and tannins on the palate. Great concentration and balance, and a finish to die for. Very Bordeauxish and sophisticated. I'd be thrilled with it at any price, but for what I paid? Oh if only I'd bought more.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Laurel Glen makes some very nice, ageable wines. Keep the rest in the cellar for several years more - those really turn into something lovely with time. (A bottle of the '85 was excellent not too long ago.)

Salil, I've still got 94's, 95's and 96's in my cellar. I stopped buying them when the release price went over $50 so I knew just how amazing the price I got these for was. Almost makes one hope the recession isn't over!

I have had luck on making offers of under the asking price for older Laurel Glen cabs at some of the wine shops I frequent. They don't move so well especially for years like 1998 which many people believe to be a bad year. Recently picked up all the 1998 a local store had left for $30 each.

Very helpful note, thanks a lot Jenise!

I've been a big fan of the 1985/1986 Laurel Glen duo for some time now, having had each 3 or 4 times over the past two or three years. But for some reason, I had gotten it into my head that the estate hadn't done well in later eras. Then, last year, I had a really delightful 1995. And a few weeks ago, an outstanding 1999. And then to read solid reports on the 2003, I am beginning to think I need to cellar some younger vintages!

Cheers,
Michael
