Seasonal challenge: Match wine to Halloween treats!

by Robin Garr » Wed Oct 12, 2011 12:05 pm

Here's a tricky treat! The kids have brought home a giant bag of mixed Halloween treats, there's hundreds of candies and other sweet goodies floating around. Let's match them with wine!

For the purposes of this project, we're looking specifically at California wines here, but we can certainly play the game from a broader perspective. It's all in fun, but answers should actually make some wine sense, or at least be defensible.

Let's see your picks!

Reese’s peanut butter cups
Snickers
Twix
Kit Kat
Butterfinger
Gummi worms
Tootsie Roll
Jelly Beans
Caramel apple
M&M's regular
M&M's peanut
Candy corn
Starburst
Smarties
Salt water taffy
Malted milk balls
Hershey's dark chocolate

Do you want us to match them or compare them? Are we supposed to eat the candy and drink the wine with the candy and see which win goes best with the candy or are we supposed to think of which candy makes us think of which wine? I am a little confused. :? On the other hand, this looks like fun!!!!

My plan is to drink an entire bottle of Port prior to eating most of those items. By then I won't care.

Yes, something is funny about this topic.

But as David mentions, Port or Mulled wine or somesuch would probably be the most logical choice. Perhaps alcoholic cider.

Not to take this too seriously, but some of these items might "work" (and I use that word, even in a quoted form, with a large grain of kosher salt) with a TBA.

Maybe the caramel apple.

But not the fruit candies.

You are over-thinking this, James. ;)

You published this on THIS website and you expected us not to overthink it? (With apologies to Mike Hughes who has never been accused of over thinking anything! ) I mean that is what we do on this forum. We overthink everything. Have you been down to the F&F Forum lately? So compare or match? Inquiring minds want to know!

Gummi Worms? I have heard of Gummi Bears.

David I think is onto something. The Reese’s Peanut buttercups or the Butterfingers might actually be a pretty good match for a Port wine.

It is so refreshing to not be the butt of James' joke for a change.
