WTN: Karlo Frontenac Gris Rose 2010

by Bruce Hayes » Mon Oct 10, 2011 9:35 am

Karlo Estates
Prince Edward County (Ontario)

Bright, light cherry red in the glass.

Cherry, lightly smoky on the nose.

Medium weight, quite intense cherry fruit, currant, lime, orange, good acidity, earthy, floral, peppery, a little syrupy, old stinky cheese.

Rich cherry fruit on the mouthwatering finish.

Different and quite enjoyable.

Purchased at the winery.

Nice to see someone else for whom cheesy (or "old stinky cheese") can be a positive attribute in red wine. After describing a very decadent and extremely pleasurable wine that way on Rogov's forum once, I was taken to task for using that and "rotting broccoli" as positive descriptors. Indeed, they don't necessarily sound very positive, but in small amounts, add immeasurably to the complexity of a wine, and its subsequent enjoyment. And I have often felt that such flavors and aromas extend the range and types of foods for which the wines may be complementary.
