WTN: 2010 Peter Lauer Ayler Kupp Riesling Senior Faß 6

2010 Peter Lauer Ayler Kupp Riesling Senior Faß 6 - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (10/9/2011)
MTV used to tout "too much is never enough." This wine proves that too much is indeed too much. The big issue is that the wine has too much acid and while it has a lot of buffering material it is absolutely dominated by teeth-stripping acid that sacrifices drinkability at the altar of authenticity. Yes, Lauer held true to the vintage and did not intervent to make something more enjoyable. Unfortunately he ended up with something that resembles what was bad about some wines from 1996, where the acids were so unpleasant as to render the wine useless as a beverage. Authentically terrible - for hipsters seeking a means to repentence through pain. (65 pts.)

Should I take that as an indication that I should not bring the Extra Trocken bottlings from 2010 over to your place? :P

I don't know. I'm sure I will have something to repent for...

Repent? You could always go the Hindu route; not bother and just figure you'll just make up for it in a future life.

I have to say I did enjoy it on the first evening I opened that wine - but after extended air it just turned into a violently acidic brute.

At least it can make trockens from 2008 seem not all that acidic...

Hi David -

Thank you for the note. Actually, I still haven't tried any 2010 German Rieslings yet - not much in the Boston area to speak of. Like Salil, I am very keen on many Trocken Rieslings these days. High acidity is usually a big plus for me, and I haven't complained about any 2008s being low in acidity. With that said, if this approaches lemon juice or Gros Plant du Pays Nantais in terms of balance, then I'll probably have to pass.

Given that I was still in high school in 1996, I have not had many of the drier wines from that vintage, but have sensed that it was an inconsistent year overall for most German regions. Is this more or less in line with your experiences?

There's high acidity, there's screechingly high acidity, and then there are some 2010s...

I just commented in the monthly topic section on the 2010 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Spätlese I had last night, which seems to be operating in a similar S&M part of the wine pleasure world.

And this is the wine with a bit of extra sweeetness?
