WTN: Catching up - Petite Sirah at my place

by David M. Bueker » Wed Sep 28, 2011 12:31 pm

Belated notes from a tasting I hosted in early September:

1995 Stags' Leap Winery Petite Sirah - USA, California, Napa Valley (9/6/2011)
A little bit austere, but still showing some fruit. The tannins are rather harsh though. Drink up!

1995 Ridge Petite Sirah York Creek - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District (9/6/2011)
Deep, dark stuff. This is still quite tannic, though it has enough fruit for balance. Still shows some of its youthful oak as well. Can be drunk now (and was better 3 hours later), but might be best to wait.

1996 Ridge Petite Sirah York Creek - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District (9/6/2011)
Very obviously plummy in character (not pruney!). Ripe, rich and hiding its tannins well until the very back end. Lots of time left here.

1997 Ridge Petite Sirah York Creek - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District (9/6/2011)
More linear in style than the 1996, yet still with lots of fruit and plenty of structure. I find the balance to be more correct here. Would seem ideally set for extended aging.

How interesting that the Ridges, at a minimum of 14 years, are judged to still be youthful. I guess that is why it is one of my favorite wineries.
Cheers, Jim

Well I honestly wish that the Petite Sirahs would age a bit faster...

Thanks. I know I have the 1995 in the cellar and either the 1997 or 1999. Either way, good to know, I can continue to wait.

Ridge's York Creek petites age and develop glacially, that's for sure. Over the last 5 years or so, we've drunk 71, 74, 79 and 82 out of my dad's (way) less than optimal cellar, and none were over the hill. The 74 was the least interesting, odd considering the overall quality of that vintage, but none seemed to be anywhere near cracking up. The 79 was stellar; long, smoky, full of peppery plum and huckleberry fruit and with a nice tannin foundation without any scratchiness left. That one probably has/had 10 years or more left in it. Amazing. Especially for $8; the price tag was still on the bottle.
Be good to yourself...

Hey, $8 wasn't cheap 30 years ago!
