We started with a sparkling wine that was crisp, pleasant, yeasty. It was served standing around the bar with snacks of breadsticks and Grana Podana cheese. Then we proceeded into a dining room for lunch.
2010 San Angelo Pinot Grigio
High toned, clarity, balanced, fruity but dry. With cheese flan and diced tomatoes.
2008 Belnero with pasta with pancetta and cherry tomatoes. A Blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Purple-red, almost mahagony, nearly opaque. Slightly astringent. Long, bright finish. Viscous. Some savory elements.
2006 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino. Reductive nose? Reddish-brown color, semi-transparent. Nice but a bit immature. Give it 4-5 more years maybe.
In the shop I would have loved to take home two bottles of Banfi Poggio all'Oro, the Brunello di Montalcino DOGC Reserva, which is 100% Sangiovese and is only produced in outstanding vintages. I have only tried it once at a tasting in Raleigh.
To have the estate ship the wine to the USA you had to purchase six bottles (it could be a mixed selection) so I reluctantly decided not to purchase any wine.
