VinoVolo is my favorite place to park at an airport. Fortunately they have a location at JFK so after an early checkin on Sept. 8, I had lunch there. With a cheese plate, I tried a flight of three Pinot Noirs. (I also visited Detroit's Vino Volo after Mo'Cool.) I would swear their notes said that the first Pinot was from Argentina but it was actually from Oregon.
2009 Apolloni V Cuvee Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon $33 a bottle. Pale blood color with some transparency. Nose suggests raspberry (shop notes say raspberry and mulling spices and chocolate-covered cherries, gingerbread and velvety tannins). Slightly brooding flavors. Faint nuance of leather and earth/soil. Pleasant. Listed as rich/brooding on the VinoVolo chart.
2008 Faively Pinot Noir Mercurey, Burgundy $29 a bottle. Listed as bright/rich on the VinoVolo chart. Dark ruby color with some transparency. Brighter raspberry nose than the Apolloni. Slightly tart with a dry finish.
2008 Fischer Pinot Noir Thermenregion, Austria $36 a bottle. I looked up Thermenregion and it is south of Vienna. Light mahagony color with some transparency. Cherries on the nose and palate. Balanced and fruity.
The cheeses were Camembert, goat cheese and white cheddar. I thought the best match for the Camembert was the Mercurey wine. I liked the goat cheese with all three wines but especially the Oregon and Burgundy wines. The white cheddar did better with the Burgundy and Austrian wines and stood up best to the Austrian wines of the three cheeses.
