WTN: 2001 Clos L'eglise

Been hearing that the 2001's are open and drinking well, so I decided to pull something from the cellar. I bought quite a few 01's and really haven't tasted any yet. This one is probably the least-ish of those I did buy, in that it's a Castillon. Decanted for an hour. Big, expressive nose of black and red berry fruit with a lot of secondary development in the blood and earth department. Big on the palate, too, deep and fruity which confused Bob who, being poured blind, found it too earthy for California cabernet but a little riper than a Bordeaux, though he ultimately zeroed in on the latter. Burly tannins and somewhat lower acid give it a rolicking mouthfeel better suited to steak or cheeseburgers than the chicken sausage-based pasta I was serving, but I am unapologetic--I wasn't looking for a wine match, I just wanted to try an 01 Bordeaux! Anyway, with time in the glass the wine developed some of that ominous muddy, soy sauce flavor in the background, which suggests it's on a pretty fast aging curve. I'll plan on drinking my remaining bottles over the next three years.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
