GSM blends

by Jon Peterson » Mon Sep 19, 2011 4:48 pm

I was at a restaurant Friday evening and there was a GSM on the wine list. I know GSM as a red wine consisting of a blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre but this wine was Grenache, Shiraz and Merlot. Is Merlot more common in this blend than I think or was there a mistake on the wine list?

GSM could also be a blend of Grenache, Sangiovese and Mourvèdre.

i've always thought of GSM as Grenache, Syrah, & Mourvedre...never seen it where Merlot's been included.

So the 'M' in GSM can be for Merlot or Mourvèdre.

Yes, CAN be, as is in there's no law against it. But a GSM is a new world version of a Southern Rhone blend and in general you would be rewarded in your expectation of the M being mourvedre, not merlot.

My expectation exactly, Jenise. I got into a little (really little) argument about a description in a wine list over this issue.

Usually when the grape composition is listed the “dominant” variety is listed first. So in years where Shiraz dominates the blend could we call it “SGM”?

I somewhat agree with Jenise, but in a year where the Mourvèdre crop didn’t do so well and the Merlot crop “faired” much better I wouldn’t mind if the “M” stood for a “pinch” of Merlot.
