Tasting for an article led me to these three Rioja Reserva and Grand Reserva, all very nice:
Berberana '06 Vina Alarde Reserva, Rioja (13% ABV): Shades of Bordeaux with an earthy nose, nice balance, $15, 90 pts.
Marques de Murrieta (Ygay) '05 Reserva, Rioja (14% ABV): Alcohol not evident and the wine was on point. $22, 91 pts.
Baron de Ley '01 Gran Reserva, Rioja (13.5% ABV): Clearly the class of the group and a special wine. Black fruit, forest floor, leather and earth come together to make this a compelling wine. Holding together nicely, don't know how much longer it could go, probably years, but why wait? $45, 93 pts.
All three would make nice dinner wines with grilled meats, and belong on a good restaurant's wine list.
