WTN: Crazy wine lovers meet blockbusters

by Rainer from CH » Tue Sep 13, 2011 3:17 pm

A memorable evening in a merry round with David, Oliver, Remo, Christian, René and absolutely magnificent wines.
David was the host and spoiled us with delicious food and his generous hospitality.
Each participant of this evening deserves my heartfelt thanks.
I hope David will find time to publish his tasting notes soon.

2009 Daniel Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel
Thanks to David. I've described this earlier on this board. One of the best Rieslings I know. To me this is playing in the top league while costing only a fraction of each of the following red blockbusters. My personal, subjective rating: 96+/100

1990 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino
Thanks to Oliver. - A sleeping giant. Despite its youthfulness, this wine presents a classic, beautifully fresh, sweet tannins and fruit-dominated nose. The scent reminds me of rose hip tea and Griotte-Chambertin. On the palate it is full-bodied with plenty of sweetness, freshness and minerality. Acidity and tannins are well integrated. Very long finish. Great, unforgettable Monfortino that comes close to the quality of the 1982 in my opinion. My personal, subjective rating: 96++/100

2002 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes
My contribution. - Deep red with youthful purple hues. In the nose, a classic and very complex combination of perfectly ripe cherries ("griottes"), fresh meat, blood, iron, smoke, black tea, a little wood. In this phase, it even has parallels to a traditionally-made, young Hermitage. Sweet and full bodied on the palate. Showing drug-like fruit and highly aromatic tannins, finishing on mineral notes. Very long finish indeed. Natural wine made from very old vines. Nothing here is reminiscent of modern winemaking. I would drink this wine up in the next 5-10 years. My personal, subjective rating: 97/100 (surely I'm overrating this because I simply love it)

1982 Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
Thanks to Remo. From a perfectly stored bottle. Sweet, creamy, mild on the palate, long finish. The embodiment of elegance and nobility of Bordeaux. Immaculately beautiful as the young Liz Taylor. The only sad thing about this great wine is the fact that it is slowly, slowly going down-hill. My personal, subjective rating: 96/100

1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Thanks to Christian. From a perfectly stored bottle. Youthful freshness in the nose. Beautiful primary fruity cassis notes. Medium-bodied with good concentration and wonderful balance. Has a great future ahead. My personal, subjective rating: 96+/100

1985 Heitz Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard
Thanks to David. From a perfectly stored bottle. My all time favourite if it comes to Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine was always great. I tried it for the first time in 1996 and was completely captivated by it. At that time (the wine still being in its primary phase) I would have rated it at 100 points. Subsequent experiences with this wine were similarly impressive. The description of its complexity would be like writing a master thesis. If you know a better Cabernet please share it with me  My personal, subjective rating: 98/100 (maybe I'm overrating this because I simply love it)

1998 Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo
Thanks to René. Unfortunately I had to rush to the railway station and had no time to properly evaluate this big wine. It is incredibly rich, young and well balanced. My personal, subjective rating: 97+/100
