WTN: A toast to Daniel Rogov w/'98 Lafon Rochet

by Jenise » Thu Sep 08, 2011 4:46 pm

Patrick Martin's TN on the '96 captured my imagination the other day, and then Daniel died so I looked to see which Bordeauxs were kosher so that Bob and I could open something in his honor. Lafon Rochet turned out to be a kosher producer, and though none of my bottles are marked 'kosher edition' I decided this would definitely suffice.

Deep ruby garnet color appropriate for it's age. It seemed pretty open on the test pour, but we decanted for an hour before dinner and indeed released both more flavor and aroma. Black cherry, cassis, minerals, cedary oak, and green tobacco were all there thoughout, and the wine is balanced with respect to acidity and tannins. The best part was that as we've watched this over the years (I started with a case) it has seasawed from tasting all black fruit to all red fruit and back to black again, and where each stage was interesting it is only now that the two come together and that it shows as you would hope it to, as good classic claret. Terrific for the price (I paid just $17 for mine, and yes I know that's not MSRP); should hold here for years.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Nice note and very nice tribute, Jenise. I shall look for this wine in the DC area but, as you mentioned, I do not expect to match your price by a long shot.

I bought mine years ago just after 9/11 when American 'patriots' had quit buying French wine and the looming release of the 2000's meant the Parker lemmings weren't buying the mostly 98's and 99's which had stacked up in a desperate distributor's warehouse in Southern California. A wine retailer agreed to take the lot and staged a sale, wherein he resold all the wine for a profit to him of just $1 a bottle. I'd drive over, fill up the trunk of my little black Jag, go home, unload, and drive back for a refill. LR was a prevously unknown brand to me, but I bought anything a salesman pointed to and said "don't miss that one". It was mayhem for wine lovers, and if you didn't grab something the second you thought about it someone else would. I spent thousands.

Wine Searcher has it anywhere from $59 to $99/botl plus shipping, of course. One of the shops is out in Long Beach CA, where I'll find myself in early October - maybe I'll stop by.

That would be Wine Country, I think. Good shop.

Nice note and update, Jenise. I think I have a bottle or two of the 1998 LR in the cellar. This chateau was has been very solid (and a good QPR) since 1995.

The 98's the only vintage I've had of it. Would certainly be open to trying others. Unfortunately, the part of the world I live in is generally devoid of Bordeaux wines so I don't get my curiosity piqued or have the opportunity to just pluck something off a shelf and try it at home. Anyway, thank you for your note on the 96, it inspired me!
