Finally, a 2010 Niagara red! I've been waiting for them for quite a while, but 2009 stock seems to keep sticking around at almost every store I go to...
12.5% alc./vol. Screwcap closure. A very reasonable $10.25 on general list at the LCBO.
Gorgeous, saturated inky-ruby colour, with a dark magenta hue. Typical hot-vintage Baco complexity on the nose: brine, peppercorns, grilled pork/bacon; juicy red fruits and plums, with a leafy/brackish note. Tart acidity on the entry; lively texture; electrifyingly sharp and alive. Mouthfilling and tart, like a bright, lithe Barbera - but, characteristically, with amazing dark colour. Lively acidity all across the palate; invigorating. Diminutive tannins and oak spice on the mid-palate; oak spice and plummy notes last on the finish.
Excellent with the pepper steaks that I grilled this afternoon.
I usually go to Peller's Baco when I want a simple pizza wine. This one has proven that in hot vintages, the aromatics can really sing. Accordingly, I am doubly excited about what Henry of Pelham has been able to coax out of their always elegant Baco offering. Time will tell.
