WTN: Brunch with friends

by David M. Bueker » Sun Sep 04, 2011 5:51 pm

Thor & Theresa stopped by for brunch today. We ate well (prosciutto, Asian pears, cheddar biscuits, a veggie laden frittata, some light salad, cheese and a blueberry/apple crisp), and had some interesting wines as well - though only one really showed as expected.

2005 Cédric Bouchard / Roses de Jeanne Pinot Blanc La Boloree
I wanted to like this a lot more than I did, but it was at least intriguing. Quite bright, but rather one note until the minerality kicked in on the finish. It was certainly a refreshing wine, which was needed with the warm temps and oppressive humidity.

2001 i Clivi Colli Orientali del Friuli Galea Corno di Rosazzo
Not showing all that well, as it was rather advance, with caramel-like sweetness. Thor mentioned that the cork was soaked, so perhaps a bit of closure failure.

2001 J. J. Christoffel Riesling Spatlese Erdener Treppchen
The 2001s seem to finally be coming into their own. This was open and just slightly developed, with a spicy element to accompany the still youthful fruit. Good balance, as the sweetness has backed off a bit to reveal more of the wine's structure.

Hi David -

Thank you for the interesting notes. I'm assuming that the I Clivi Galea was the white one?

At any rate, I've had a good amount of success with this producer, but have not had any of their 2001s. Both the 1999 and the 2002 Galea Blanco showed very nicely when I had them in 2008, however. As an added plus, the I Clivi whites tend to cost significantly less (at least over here) than the likes of Schiopetto and Jermann; never mind the impressive but pricey orange stuff from Radikon and Gravner.

Sounds like a good meal although with all this autumn food and the recent change in weather, it's tough to see the summer go!
