So how rare is Lynch Bages blanc?

by Jenise » Sat Sep 03, 2011 9:35 am

I took a bottle of the 04 Blanc de Lynch Bages, as it's formally known, to Bill Spohn's Friday lunch yesterday. It and it's sister bottle are the only two bottles of this I've ever seen, and I don't recall ever seeing a tasting note on one nor has anyone ever brought one to a Friday lunch so I believed it to be somewhat scarce on this side of the pond; however, up in Canada with their Commanderie de Bordeaux and different supply chains, there's always a danger of them saying "oh we have that up here all the time".

The conversation at the table, however, made it quite clear that's not the case and indeed, happily, I provided a rarity. But just how rare, I wonder. Anyone know what the production is?

Is "a little quantity" a good answer? That's what Tom Stevenson's Wine Encyclopedia has to say.

actually generally readily available around here, Zachys always offers it.
Chris K (thewinedoctor.com) says 3000 cases a year. Certainly not widely available, but not really a rarity.
I've had several vintages, it's generally ok, but I think one could probably get better value absent curiosity factor in well-chosen Pessac.
But as you say, fun to bring to geek events (kind of like Gouges blanc or other CdN whites)/

Thanks, Dale, that's the kind of perspective I was looking for. Re value, not sure what it goes for at regular retail but the $40 I paid for this one on Wine Commune was in line with the quality experience in the bottle, I thought. And here in Bordeaux Siberia, quality white Bdx's are almost nonexistent.

Totally in agreement wih Dale, tasted a few over the years. Ok, just thought it was overpriced. Really haven't looked for it in years. Not something I would carry in our store.

I like a bit more than Lou, but generally would find things like Carbonnieux and La Louviere much better values.
Other than Ch. Marguaux's Pavillon Blanc, never had a compelling non-Graves white (and Pavillon Blanc is a poor value compared to top Graves).
