Dinner with David and Laura at the local BYO. A very good (and incredibly inexpensive) meal once again, some lovely wines and good friends to share them with. Nice way to end the week.

2009 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling 'Schmitt'
Powerful yet light on its feet, conveying a spectrum of bright Riesling fruit, gentle herbal and floral accents and a stony base underneath with bright acidity keeping it very fresh, precise and superbly balanced. Great wine.

2006 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Spätlese
Another of those '06 Spätlese that's really a bargain Auslese (if not riper/richer). This is immense, packed with rich peaches, red apples and and tropical fruited flavours with honeyed and vanilla cream accents but it's remarkably well balanced with bright acids cutting through the intense sweetness and richness. Very enjoyable now, though I imagine this will provide a lot more pleasure with a lot more time once the baby fat fades and it starts to develop.

2000 Edmunds St. John Los Robles Viejos Rozet Vineyard
The back label just says it's a blend of Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache - Steve, if you're reading, any further details?
But either way, this is fantastic. Warm earth, leather, bright red fruits and a vivid peppery seasoning combining into a seamless whole with the structure and flavour components all integrated. Fully mature and drinking beautifully.

My experiences with this wine mirror your own. It makes an interesting comparison to the wines of the S. Rhone, as it has its own quite distinct character. Anyway, though I'm not Steve (we've even been seen in the same room together) I can tell you that it's 45% Mourvedre, 30% Syrah, 21% Grenache and 4% Counoise. Aged in old oak puncheons. This, and more, is available for your reading here.
