2007 Römergut Moll ‚Verführung zur „Blauen Stunde“‘ Merlot Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 12,0% alc.
You will not find me recommending much in the way of German Merlot (outside of Knipser), but this is one delicious bottle of wine. Almost everything I taste from Moll, I like, sometimes really like, and it is always very reasonably priced. My only complaint is that they sometimes have the tendency to use a little too much oak, but as is the case with this wine, it can work out. Three years it has spent in Barrique (wha?), yet it is very elegant with silky tannins; Plum, blackberry fruit, faintly chocolatey, menthol, but none of the paprika that flavors the more underripe versions of Merlot that grace our Pfälzer slopes. The alcohol is moderate, but the fruit ample. Some olive and caramel, but it actually reminds me a little of a mid-priced WA Merlot, though perhaps without quite the depth of flavor and grip. Still, I think that’s a pretty good compliment given the circumstances. Well, Merlot is getting more popular 'round here.
Cheers,
Bill
