Hail storms like that are usually very localised. It looks as if a lot of Zeltingen may be a write-off but neighbouring communes could be OK.

Supposedly many villages were affected in and around the Bernkastel area. Unfortunately this was more than a localised storm.

Really distressing. Good luck to the growers in the Mosel.

Devastating. Rheinhessen and Baden were also badly hit. The Pfalz minimally. It will be very tough to recover this close to harvest.

I wonder if Champagne and Alsace have been hit in the same series of storms. I'll see if I can find any information.

Thanks for posting this. I hope the vineyards can pull off a profitable harvest.
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Johannes Selbach reports from Zeltingen that they were "pretty badly hit" and are "still assessing the damage."

Certainly bad news for everyone whose vineyards were hit by the hail.
Bill - I'm hoping that your vines fared well, since the Pfalz fared better than some of the other regions.

Thanks Andrew,
Thankfully we were spared. I heard yesterday that Kallstadt may have gotten some damage. I hope that the Saumagen is safe.
Cheers,
Bill

Tough stuff. So that makes two difficult/smaller crop vintages in a row? Will that be trouble for some vulnerable producers?

The major frost damage earlier in the year coupled with the hail damage will make for a very small vintage -Last year was the smallest in 25 years. 2011 may come in below that. That is huge trouble for producers.
