WTN: A nice, dry Riesling

2010 Georg Mosbacher Forster Stift Riesling Kabinett Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 11,5% alc.

The Stift borders the village of Forst to the east and because it consists of sandy-loam vineyards on deeper, flatter land, it cannot be included among the array of Forster Grand Crus of Sandstones, Basalt, Clay and Chalky soils up on the hill towards the forest. This wine won’t win any complexity challenges, and doesn’t have the dazzling mix of exotic fruit, mineral, and texture of the classic Forst terroirs, but what a great little Wednesday night Riesling. Really nice peach and citrus fruit, a tight, sinewy frame, and not as much acidity as one might imagine considering the vintage, Prädikat, and absence of sugar. Good.

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill -

Thanks for the note. Sounds like a nice little everyday wine - don't see Mosbacher all that often, though.

I'll have to look for that one, Weygandt-Metzler is the importer so we get their wares at the shop up the road. The Forster Ungeheuer Auslese 2007 from them is one of my happy wines.

Two weeks ago I had the oportunity to visit Mosbacher´s in Forst and to taste the Forster Stift 2009 and 2010 side by side. The younger one seems to be still too young, the 2009 shows much more complexity and you can see the one year difference too. The vintage characteristics will most probably never enable the 2010 to reach todays shape of 2009 but both are for me maybe the best QPR from this winegrower. And not to forget their fantastic Sauvignon blanc... :)
