WTN: 2001 Keenan Napa Cab.

by Jim Grow » Mon Aug 22, 2011 9:07 pm

This wine, the 25th anniversary bottling, was indeed very nice but still pretty primary. As it opened during our dinner of ribeye and bruschetta it became very integrated after about an hour (we are slow eaters) . The flavors were of plum and cassis, mostly plum, unfortunately, but still very nice. This wine may develope nice secondary flavors with 5-10 more years of age in a cool cellar. I hope I have more. Abv of %14.3

My very limited experience with Keenan was like yours that need a lot of bottle age to really shine. Unfortunately, I don't see much Keenan in my area so I believe the last vintage I had was 92 and it was very nice at 14 or 15 years of age.

I'm pretty sure Nils Venge was consulting and is responsible for the 2001 cab at Keenan. 2001 has a reputation as a vintage that will age for quite a few years and NIl's wines usually do. I've tasted a few vintages of the late Keenan's and they have all been solid.
