I stayed in Ann Arbor Thursday night and dined at The Earle on an appetizer of tortellini alla panna with pancetta and entree of duck breasts with brandy, red currants, and peaches. Side vegetables were mashed potatoes and a combo of grilled cauliflower, broccoli and zucchini slices. The sauce on the duck was delicious. The dish had two duck breasts but after the appetizer I could only eat one.
In the dim "supper club" lighting (with pianist tinkling the ivories) I was not sure of the color of the wine but it had lots of transparency. Very refreshing on the palate--not overbearing. Good acid balance to the fruit. Good match for the creamy tortellini. Faintly reminiscent of pear but more just enjoyable for its own delicacy. Might be worthy of the buzz I've heard about this producer. Under $30 a bottle in the West and a few dollars more in New York according to wine-searcher.com.
With the duck breast I had a 2009 Montepulciana d'Abruzzi, figuring I would have plenty of Oregon Pinot Noirs at Mo'Cool. Nothing special.
