WTN: Food and wine at Nana's Restaurant, Durham

by JC (NC) » Wed Aug 10, 2011 5:23 pm

August 5th I revisited one of my favorite restaurants in the Triangle area. They have a cruvinet and offer 3-oz. and 5-oz. pours of wine as well as wine by-the-glass or bottle.
Many things on the menu sounded good but I was in the mood for veal so had the veal ravioli appetizer and grilled veal loin with herbed spatzle as entree. I couldn't pass up peach cobbler for dessert. I ordered a 3-oz. pour of Certetto Arneis and a 5-oz. pour of 2008 Avignonesi Rosso de Toscana. It seems like every Arneis I try is totally different from previous ones. The Ceretto Arneis was a pale straw color with slightly pungent nose and taste. I didn't like this one as well as Ponzi Arneis, Oregon, or the Italian one I had on another visit to Nana's.

The veal ravioli was served with heirloom tomatoes and crispy spinach. The dish was a little spicy but not too much for me.

I was going to ordered braised veal ribs but then they said I could have the leaner loin with the same side dishes so I ordered the loin. It came with the herbed spatzle, pine nuts and a tomato/eggplant capanata. The veal loin was grilled over hickory wood.

2008 Avignonesi Rosso de Toscana was purple/crimson color; semi-opaque. Lovely nose. Red cherries on the nose and palate. Very ripe and fruity. Viscous. Surprisingly long finish. Peppery on the finish. Highly recommended and a nice pairing with the veal loin. My 5-oz. pour was from the last bottle that the restaurant had on hand.

In the event you have not tried it yet, you may want to try the Seghesio Arneis from Sonoma..If you have tasted it, wd be interested in your impressions..We have been buying this wine by the case since discovering it on a trip to Sonoma in 2008

The Ceretto Arneis blange was the first Arneis I had ever tasted, probably about 20 or more years ago..Over the years I have noticed a fair amount of variation in this wine, some vintages I loved, others were not so rewarding ..
