Tried this last night w/ dinner:
1. Bodega Avanthia Godello DdO: Valdeorras (35 yr old vines grafted from centenary Godello; 13.5%) 2008: Light golden color; quite attractive fragrant/perfumed/floral/carnations/spicy/pineapply/bit R-like light stoney/mineral lovely nose; soft some mineral/stoney light floral/carnations/pineapple/nutmeg light vanilla/oak bright/zippy flavor; long bright/vibrant/zippy spicy/pineapple/floral/carnations light mineral/stoney finish; a really lovely fragrant white w/ a nice balance of fruit and mineral; much like TablasCreek Vermentino; fairly priced at $30.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Obviously a wine w/ pretensions of greatness from the price. Comes in a massive btl w/ a humongously deep punt. A GeorgOrdanez selection.

Tom,
I think you nailed it in one with your "pretensions of greatness" line. I love Godello for its minerally, crisp and floral character and oak treatment mars that character for my tastes. I place it in the same category as Muscadet and that to me means minimal oakiness. It's all the more sad when dealing with an old vine Godello such as this one. Oh, well.

Mark,
I think the oak usage in this wine was pretty minimal and, at least to my palate, didn't distract from the Godello minerality. What struck me most was the ripe/lush/fruit character,
the Calif style of the wine. Most of the other Godellos (maybe 15-20 in number) have had their emphasis on the minerality and oft rather lean/austere sort of wines, sometimes
to the point of being a bit thin.
