I went to The Wine Rack on Saturday morning with Bob to pull some wine from my locker and ran into Pierre Rovani doing similar work on his locker. I had never met Pierre, but he quickly introduced himself and asked if I was ready to have a glass of wine. Pierre went on to open 3 bottles from his cellar which he shared with 6 folks who happened to be at the Wine Rack. He spent about 90 minutes talking about the wine, talking about Burgundy, and talking about the good ole days at the Wine Advocate. Definitely not how I was expecting to spend my Saturday morning!
All of the wines were served blind.
- 2002 Lucien Le Moine Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Served blind. The lush fruit of 2002 comes through on the nose with with some nice forestal undertones. The palate was approachable, but still clearly young. Palate was unmistakingly bright and forward with nice tertiary mushroom, floral, and spice components. Thought the spice was more reminiscent of Vosne than Chambolle. (89 pts.) - 1999 Domaine Joblot Givry 1er Cru Clos du Cellier Aux Moines - France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru
Still needs time to fully mature, but already there's a sense of elegance on the nose that's really beautiful. There are some brambly red fruit, dense tones of crushed rocks and lovely spice tones. The palate was a monolith of red fruit, but had nice weight and structure. The finish had nice acidity too. Will need time to develop more complexity, but there's a lot of promise at this point. (91 pts.) - 2007 Remoissenet Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
This had a beautifully spicy nose with nice fruit and floral tones. The palate wasn't as expressive as the nose but featuring red fruit, some smokey minerals and brambles. Drinking very nicely right now - could probably age this for another 7-10 years. (89 pts.)
