WTN: 2001 Edmunds St. John Rocks and Gravel

by David M. Bueker » Sat Aug 06, 2011 5:54 pm

Recent cellar release from Steve Edmunds. This is right in its sweet spot, with warm earth, herb with dark red fruit still well in place. It's too easy to drink, and perhaps requires bottling in a larger format. Too bad that ship has sailed.

Do you hear me Steve? I know you used to bottle magnums. Please do so again!!!

I have one bottle of Rocks and Gravel in the basement. I believe it is '04. I am trying to be patient with it. Now that MD. allows direct shipping at least I can buy some of his newer stuff!

One bottle in cellar. Perhaps incantations to magically make them jeroboams?

Dale, what we need to do is sneak back to Bob's. He had a case hiding in his cellar.

James, would you please make it clear that you refer to Bob Ross? I have a few mixed cases of ESJ wines, and don't mind sharing, but I am not sure I have enough that you want to sneak in for. Plus I am sure that Ross would be happy to see all of youse guys and gals again!

This thread reminded me I still had a few bottles of this left so I opened one of them yesterday afternoon. Pretty much as David described. Easy to drink? Very!

Do ESJ wines go through that dumb phase that many wines meant for aging seem to go through? His wines always seem to be so darn good.

A few years back I found the 01 Rocks and Gravel to be shutdown. About 3 bottles over a six month span were very unyielding. This would have been when they were 5-6 years old. However, I've not noticed this(yet) with the 05 R&G.
