1919 Pinotage on sale at the Nederburg Auction

A curiosity for wine lovers, no doubt, and a testimony to the longevity of Pinotage:

Mark Norrish, Picardi Rebel GM Wine, has donated a 3L bottle of KWV Pinotage 1919 vintage, to be sold at the Nederburg Auction this month.

Norrish stated that he had opened a bottle [750 ml ] last year for some overseas visitors, and it was in good condition, with plenty molasses, and treacley flavours, but still with a wonderful structure . He was so delighted with the wine, that he decided to donate the 3lt to the Auction. For a wine that is 87 years young, someone is going to have a wonderful time consuming this.

Paul, I think Peter's point is that a passionate love for a grape (or anything else) should be informed by knowledge. Pinotage wasn't bred until 1925, and was never made commercially until 1959, and not in significant amounts until well into the '60s. A 1919 Pinotage is not merely rare, it's impossible.

Frankly, I'd gently remind you, too, that we've pretty much agreed to maintain this forum for serious wine talk and keep the gee-whiz news items about offbeat grapes and varieties on the Netscape WineLovers Community.

It was a great read, and a great trick played on me too. Man - I KNOW that Pinotage was invented in '25, but that point sure didn't stick yesterday.

Which is fine....as long as you don't post about fictional wines and wines you haven't tasted on this site, please. And keep the 'news items' to a dull roar - my understanding is that that should be posted in the other forum.
