NotA BR: Two New Wine Books

by TomHill » Mon Aug 01, 2011 3:57 pm

I notice there will be two new wine books out at the end of the month:

AliceFiering: Naked Wine: Letting Grapes Do What Comes Naturally

GeraldAsher: A Vineyard In My Glass

No information on the contents of Alice's book but I presume it'll further her NaturalWine cause. Hopefully, it will have more solid information and less of the whiney polemics that dominated her anti-Parker book.

I'm really looking forward to GeraldAsher's book. Previewing some of it on Amazon, it looks like it'll be a very educational read along the lines of Kermit's books. Asher is one of the most erudite wine writers around and I always learn from him. And a very proper Britisher in the highest sense of the word.

Both available for pre-order on Amazon.

Finger Lakes aficionados will be interested in two recent books:

Summer in a Glass: The Coming of Age of Winemaking in the Finger Lakes by Evan Dawson

Seasons of a Finger Lakes Winery by John C. Hartsock

Dawson surveys the recent history of winemaking in the Finger Lakes, focussing on the people who have made it happen. A special Wine Issue of Edible magazine provides a nice complement to it. Harstock's book is about the journey of Gary Barletta in founding Long Point Winery on Cayuga Lake. Gary is a Syracuse boy who had won just about every possible medal for amateur winemaking before making the plunge in middle age into the commercial game. He's a great character too. Both books are very well done.

Summer in a Glass is a terrific book re the finger Lakes, will try to visit some of the wineries featured in the book when we go FL wine touring later this summer. Look forward to reading Gerald Asher's book, one book was enough for me re Alice in Blunderland, not that much of a masochist.
