WTN: Dinner with Oliver and my parents

by David from Switzerland » Sat Jul 30, 2011 8:28 pm

Spent an afternoon with my mom learning how veal breast used to be separated, stuffed and stitched up back when she was a girl, “before everyone got lazy and rolled their roasts.” Oliver said something to the extent that he could eat this again any day, if not every day…

Bruno Rocca Barbaresco 2007
Thanks to Oliver. Garnet ruby-red. Rose-hip, soft sweet blood orange jam. Balanced, pretty wine showing the precocious side of the vintage, if lacking some depth and complexity. Lightly dry and grainy tannin, relatively but not too flavourful. Drink or hold. Rating: 88+/89

Batzella Bolgheri Superiore Tâm 2007
Thanks to Oliver. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Cabernet Franc, aged 24 months in French barrique. Opaque purple almost to the rim. Very sweet fruit, jammy, good density, fairly complex, faint pepper. Quite full-bodied. Nice acidity. Marzipan oak induced tannin, some vanilla, some nuttiness with airing. Good length. Well-made, sizeable, balanced but not yet harmonious, if undeniably modern type of wine the likes of me may or may not like “better” mature. Just as good 12 hours later. Not sure there is any minerality nor a sense of terroir expression here. But nicely firm. No other choice than to like for what it is. Rating: 90+/91(-?)

Greetings from Switzerland, David.
