WTN: Barolo lunch

by Jay Labrador » Wed Jul 27, 2011 6:55 am

Notes from lunch at Va Bene with the Usuals.

Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato 2000 - Sweet on the nose and palate.Bacon and dried berry and cherry. Modern-style Barolo. Tannins are still a bit firm but this is really close to peak. Very good.

Conteisa Cerequio Barolo Gromis 1990 - A little murky with some browning on the edge. Good fruit. a bit of prune and tobacco mostly. Another modern-style Barolo. Very good although it seemed to fade a bit after a couple of hours in the glass.

Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Enrico VI 1997 - Quite dark. Great nose - minty and floral. Rich and sweet. Real easy to drink and my favorite in this lineup. This has always been one of my favorite Barolos and this bottle certainly didn't disappoint.

There were also a couple of Bordeauxs - Gruaud Larose 1985, Grand Puy Lacoste 2005 and a Clos du Marquis as well as a Giacosa Roero Arneis but I stayed with the Barolos.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
