2005 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett

This ought to be bottled in magnum, maybe by the jero because a bottle just vapourizes.

About as elegant, refreshing and pure as Riesling gets. Still incredibly primary (but it did come from the glacial cellar - thanks David!), but so delicious with perfect balance and a finish that seems to last about as long as the bottle did. ;)

I just had my first Schaefer last week (2008 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett) and man did I like it. It was interesting to contrast it to the Prum from the same vineyard (though that was an '07). Needless to say I'll be going to back to the well for more of Herr Schaefer's wares and trying to expand my horizons over his holdings/pradikats.

Sounds like you have a lot to look forward to as I believe Schaefer's WS holdings are considered less impressive than his vineyards in Graach. But I haven't had many of his WS myself.

Salil -

Thanks for the great note, as always.

Kelly - Thank you for the note on the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett - glad to hear that you enjoyed it. For some reason, I don't drink as many of the Schaefer wines as I should, and haven't had anything of his from outside Graach yet.

Willi Schaefer's Wehlener Sonnenuhr wines always seem to speak more of Schaefer than of Sonnenuhr to me. I think that is due to Schaefer's plot(s) being outside the heart of the Sonnenuhr, not from an deficiency in Schaefer's approach.
