WTN: Summer refreshment

by Joe Moryl » Tue Jul 26, 2011 10:52 pm

2010 Chateau l'Escarelle, Les Belles Bastilles Rose, Coteaux Varois en Provence:
Very pale salmon color, some light strawberry and mineral on the nose. Refreshing strawberry and watermelon on the palate; light bodied and fresh with some minerals. Not particularly long or complex, but decent summer wine. Presumably Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre (from the producer's website), although the shop says Carignan and Cinsault. Fair value at $15.

2010 Semi-dry Riesling, Dr. Konstantin Frank, Finger Lakes (NY):
One of the bottles I picked up on a recent trip through the Finger Lakes. The 2010 Rieslings I tried were very impressive and Dr. Frank's were among the best (both the dry version and this one). Light color, but a vibrant nose with peaches, grass and mineral. Bursting with juicy fruit, there is grapefruit, peach and a grassy, almost SB-like note. Very long and focused, with great balance between the sweetness and acidity. Goes down all too easily. One of the best off-dry Dr. Frank's in recent memory. $14, 11.5% abv.

P.S. Dr. Frank has a 2010 Gruner Veltliner that is quite correct and promising, especially considering it is their first attempt. I think a few other FL producers are starting to dabble in GV as well (Lamoreaux Landing, IIRC, is another).

Hermann Wiemer also runs a nursery and when I was visiting last spring I noticed what looked like a shipment of vines about ready to be picked up. Here is a photo I snapped:

In addition to the Gruner, there were quite a few vines labeled Petit Manseng. I'm not sure who is growing that. I know Morton Hallgren at Ravines has some interest in Alpine varieties and Red Tail Ridge is growing some Teroldego. Nice to see the area's producers explore parameter space with things probably more suitable than Sangiovese.....
