WTN: 2009 Konzelmann Estate Merlot Reserve (Niagara VQA)

$13.95 in the VQA section on regular list; screwcap closure.

Light- to medium-garnet colour. Required about an hour in the open bottle to really flesh out. Once it did, it showed typical plush, dusty violet Merlot aromas; a plummy, fleshy nose; pretty and aromatic. Well composed. Light-/medium-bodied; crisp and lightly grippy; no greenness (despite the less-than-ideal vintage); warm, chewy and expansive; some oak spice toward the end (spent 9 months in oak); tart and cleansing on the finish.

Konzelmann has always had wines that I like - his Pinot Blanc is one of the best whites I've had in recent years. They've also gone to screwcap closures: a move I wholeheartedly support and applaud.

Hi Paul B.

I agree that Konzellmann makes good wines. I particularly like his rieslings and gewurzs. I think he makes some of the best gewurzs in Ontario. Makes a mean icewine too.

Totally agree. I love their classic labels too: no kitschy modern B.S. :)

Seriously though, the Shiraz and Pinot Blanc are really great.
