2010 Bassermann-Jordan Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten Riesling Kabinett Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 12,0%
Portions of this vineyard can be counted among the top sites in Deidesheim (and some folks use it as a GG), though it is far from uniform. There is a lot of sandstone here and also some loam. Theoretically, the wines should be fruit-driven, with little minerality. For one reason or another, Bassermann-Jordans wines never seem to play by the rules from this site. Year in and out this Kabinett Trocken is a wickedly austere, high-extract, mineral-laden laser-beam that is anything but fruity and charming. Analytically, the 2009 was probably somewhat gentler, but marginally. Macho Kabinett without a whisper of sugar, it is nonetheless impressive in what it has got. It tastes of those delicious green Israeli grapefruit, pine and mint, and intense stoniness for a wine of such low Oechsle. It is looooooong and hits with plenty of acid. Not for everyone, but if you dig Savoie Jacquere, Muscadet, or Txakolina, this may be in your wheelhouse.
Cheers,
Bill
