WTN: Lenz Moser Prestige Gruner Veltliner 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Jul 24, 2011 10:08 am

Niederösterreich

Light yellow in the glass.

Lemon rind, peppery on the nose.

Medium weight, tangy lemon, citrus peel, good acidity, clean, refreshing, intense, juicy.

Mouthwatering, peppery, lightly bitter on the finish.

I served this to some non-wine friends (yes, I have some) and they were quite impressed.

Screwcap closure.

Purchased at $12.95 (Canadian).

Thanks for the note Bruce. As always, your notes are eminently useful to me because we have access to the same wines!

I've had the Lenz Moser GV in the past but don't recall there being any of GV's famed pepperiness. In fact, it's been the distinct minority of GVs that I've had that had any of that quality. Usually the examples we get are on the minerally and citrusy side of neutral: wish there would be more of that spicy white-pepper quality.

As an aside, speaking about that flavour ... Konzelmann Shiraz has a great deal of it. I have been duly impressed so far by the ability of Shiraz to make interesting wine in Niagara.
