Passive Cellar Temps in this heat wave

by Jim Grow » Sat Jul 23, 2011 10:19 am

My passive wine cellar in Southern Ohio is running at 68 deg. F. It usually varies between 55-65 throughout the year. I guess that staying below 70 deg. for a few months will not be dangerous. What are some others out there seeing for temps in their passive wine cellars?

Hi Jim,

Mine is running similar to yours, about 69 F here in Sault, Canada. We have broken some temperature records in this heat wave, but relief is in sight for us. Next week our highs drop down to the high 60s to low 70s. Yeah!

As hot as I remember here (103 yesterday, and more importantly many days in a row of over 90, so not enough evening cooldown). I have a fairly deep (below grade stone walls on 2 sides, 2 well insulated walls facing basement) cellar in Westchester county, just north of ciiy. At top of my cellar it hit 70F yesterday (highest spot, usually 5-6 cooler at lowest part), as high as it has ever gotten. I put on (unfortunately mounted low) AC I installed couple years ago, quickly dropped to 67 at top. My usual range is 50-68 at top with slow seasonal changes, which is ok with me (passive cellars are limited by local ground temps, for here perfect insulatation would be about 54 degrees). I'd worry more re quick changes, I've never seen more thsn 1-2 degrees F per day.

MIne's running about 18.5C (65F), even though the outside temperature hit 38C (100F) on Thursday. It probably helps that the house is air conditioned, and the rest of the basement (the cellar, with its 6 inches of insulation, is in the basement) is the coolest part on the house.

Nearly 70 here in my cellar in central Maryland, just north - northwest of DC. 100 on the deck. Actually, considering the outside temps, I'm not too upset.

I must be the only one here not worried about in-door/outside temps. We have hardly had any summer at all, temps have been low and plenty of rain this past month. Still enough snow in the mountains....aaagh wont go there!

No problem here, Bob. After an exceptional Spring, we are having an absolutely rotten July with continuous rain and wind and maxima around 18°C. My passive cellar, which got up to 21°C (70°F) for several days in 2003, is at present at 16°C (61°F).
