WTN: Triple-digit tipples

by Mark S » Fri Jul 22, 2011 8:18 pm

Who sez heat and wine don't mix? Just need the right wines. With 104 degrees F in Elmira and 101 in Syracuse Thursday, it's feeling a little like Mojave.

Gaia, Thalassitis, Santorini, 2009
Minerally 7UP® lemon-lime flavors, very bright tasting and Muscadet-like, but with more heft to it. [Assyrtico from Episkopi Vineyard] 13%

Descendientes de J. Palacios, Bierzo, 'Petalos', 2006
Salted plum and chinese 5-spice powdered duck on the nose. Sweet and salted plum, char-siu bar-be-que sauce, pickled sweet onion relish. Nice panoply of flavors. Drinking well now. Chalky finish, with soft tannins. Delicious. 14%

J.P. Brun, Fleurie, 2008
I always like this wine, and the 2008 vintage has made this crystalline in it's purity of flavors of crunchy red & white fruits (especially cranberry, tart cherry, unripe raspberry, white currants, and Thompson seedless grapes). Refreshing.
