International Wine Tasting

by David Mc » Fri Jul 22, 2011 12:23 pm

I was at a wine tasting last night. Here is the rundown.

Before the official event, I had a glass of white Joseph Drouhin - I don't have any other specs on it. It was quite unexciting and flat. The taste collapsed and had a watery feel. Hopefully the red Drouhin I have at home is better.

On to the actual tasting:

NV Gosset Brut Excellence, Champagne, France , served with baked oysters.
I've only had a few bottles of real champagne so I can only compare the Gosset to L. Aubry Fils. Overall, I liked the champagne, it had a light and critus taste but not as much of a yeasty taste of the Aubry.

2008 Domain Zind Humbrecht Gewurtztraminer, Alsace, France
I just had a bottle of this a few weeks ago. I'm not a Gewurtz fan (especially ZH) but it went well with the Strawberry Gazpacho. After taking a shot of gazpacho and then sipping the wine, the intense flavors of the Gewurtz was muted.

2009 Finca Deceoro Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina
Served with red curried mussels, shallots and banana peppers. The malbec was very smooth, almost a bit smoky with moderate tannins.

2009 Salvano Fosco, Italy
I really don't remember this wine so much - the tasting were more like a glassful instead of a taste so I already had way more than I normally drink (plus I was engaged in conversation). I do remember it was light and dry with strong tannins on the initial taste which rapidly dissipated. It was served with salmon, which didn't seem like the best match to me (they should have served a burgundy!).

Little Bosco, Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco, Italy , served with Panna Cotta, strawberry, kaffir lime marshmallow.
When they poured it, the light red color (almost rose) and the bubbles caught my eye. What is this?! I've never seen such a wine! It was slightly sweet and light and went perfectly with the dessert. I really enjoyed this wine (what ever it is) and will search this out.
