NYT Article: Wine and Vespas!

I like how this article refutes the traditional puritanical approach of "Don't drink alcohol and drive mopeds on narrow, winding, hilly roads."

Of course they don't talk much about the Slovenian side. The fact is though that when they created new borders in this area after WW2, 80% of the Collio (Brda in Slovenian) went to the Slovenians (Yugoslavia at the time.) This may sound unfair but they had already lost Gorizia and Trieste which were largely populated by Slovenians.
So when you're drinking a Collio wine chances are either the grapes are from the Slovenian side or from God knows where (Isonzo flatlands? Oltrepo Pavese?)
For Brda aficionados like me, it's a good thing the Slovenian Collio is largely ignored - keeps prices reasonable.

A nice article, although it does mention that the couple fell off their Vespa (though perhaps not after imbibing). Also, when in the region 2 years ago I felt that wines from the Slovenian side generally were over-priced compared those from the Italian side. Which wines from Brda should I have tried?

Movia is one of the more available producers from Brda. Depending on your view on international borders, Zidarich and Vodopivec would be other names I'd look for. The wines aren't cheap, though.

Movia is kind of an old guard. Hats off to him though as he has brought attention to the Brda and makes a valid product often with innovative techniques.
There's a whole slew of young people there making good wine under the radar. I'm proud to have brought the only Brda wine to Chambers St. and it's reasonably priced. This may constitute self-promotion so it's ok if the moderators zap this post. :)

Keep in mind they are more artisanally made on the Brda side (generally smaller quantities) which may account for the higher price. Also, they know their product is unique and good. If you go to a producer direct you should get a decent price, especially if you hang out a bit - plus they speak better english.

Of course as far as price there's few whites more expensive than Gravner and Radikon which although they are Slovenian get to put "made in Italy" on the bottle.
