- 1999 Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer, Mosel (10/15/2006)
Just emerging petrol, and subtly creamy fruit say that this wine is just barely edging into mid-life. There's still lots of apples and cream, along with plenty of sweetness, but the edge is off, and the minerals are showing more clearly than on release 6 years ago. This, like many '99s, is showing better balance now than when it came out. - 2004 Albert Boxler Gewürztraminer - France, Alsace, Alsace AOC (10/15/2006)
Excellent gewurztraminer. All the classic pineapple, lychee and rose elements, with good palate richness and balanced sweetness. It's also an outstanding food accompaniment with subtly spicy Asian fare. I could drink this all night.
The Kerpen was a lovely match with my tuna/salmon/shrimp roll, while the Gewurz paired better with the sea bass filets. Neither was sweet enough to stand up to Laura's chicken dish, but both were very fine with the duck.
