2009 Morgon Cote du Py Vielles Vignes, Domaine Laurent Gauthier:
The '09 cru Beaujolais have received a lot of attention, but here is a Morgon producer making a VV from the Cote du Py which I have not seen mentioned before. Odd how the '09 crus started out being praised, but there now appears to be some backlash claiming the wines are over-ripe, etc. This is a very deep colored wine, with a rather shy nose that comes around after some time in the glass. Succulent blackberry, very mineral and focused, hints of black pepper, blood and bitter orange on the finish. Lovely wine, drinking well now but should age too. 12.5% abv and $17.50 from Princeton Corkscrew (NJ). Let me put in a good word for this shop: many nice artesinal selections but not always the same ones found at Chambers and other NYC shops.
